The theme for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is ‘Only Justice’, developed by the Christian Churches of Indonesia. Here in Banstead we shall be joining our brothers and sisters of the Banstead Five Churches at 6.00pm on Tuesday 22nd January at St Ann’s Church, Brighton Road.
Indonesia is an area of ethnic and religious diversity, where there is a strong emphasis on the need for a unity that is found in diversity and built on solidarity and collaboration. Yet issues of economic diversity and inequality are coming strongly to the fore, and religious pluralism is challenged by radical forms of religion.
This gives us the opportunity to reflect on the context in which we here pray for Christian unity. How do divisions in our society contribute to the fragmentation of the Church? How does injustice in British contexts create challenges to our pursuit of a shared life together?
Round the world Christian Churches use the days of 18th-25th January to pray for unity. You can download the leaflet of prayers for the Week from www.ctbi.org.uk/week-of-prayer-for-christian-unity-resources.
