The theme for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is ‘They showed us unusual kindness’, developed by the Christian Churches in Malta and Gozo. Here in Banstead we shall be joining our brothers and sisters of the Banstead Five Churches at 6.00pm on Sunday 19th January at St Mary’s Church, Burgh Heath.
Prayers this week use the account in the Acts of the Apostles which records how the Gospel came to Malta when St Paul was shipwrecked there, and how he and his companions met with ‘unusual kindness’ in their dangerous and anxious situation. Today many people are making dangerous journeys by land and sea to escape warfare, natural disasters and poverty. Their lives too are at the mercy of immense and coldly indifferent forces – not the winds and weather only but political, economic and human forces.
The story challenges us: do we collude with the cold forces of indifference, or do we show ‘unusual kindness’ and become witnessed to God’s love for all?
Round the world Christian Churches use the days of 18th-25th January to pray for unity. You can download the leaflet of prayers for the Week from www.ctbi.org.uk/week-of-prayer-for-christian-unity-resources.
